Separate the DUI court case from the driving record

For the prosecution and final outcome of a Ventura County DUI case, use Ventura Superior Court. For your California driving history or a license-related entry, use DMV. An arresting agency’s report describes the incident; a court record describes the criminal proceeding; DMV records driving privileges and reported convictions. One response should not be substituted for the other when a recipient asks for a particular kind of proof.

Start with the court case number if you have it. Otherwise keep the defendant’s full name, approximate case year and the court named on the papers. Request the judgment, dismissal or other final order for the DUI count rather than assuming a citation or initial charge is the final result.

View or request the public court file

Adult criminal files are maintained at the Ventura Hall of Justice Records Department, Room 218, 800 South Victoria Avenue, Ventura, CA 93009; telephone 805-289-8668. Published records-office and telephone hours are weekdays, 8 a.m.–4 p.m., excluding holidays. Bring current picture identification to view a file; the court holds it until the file is returned.

Public lobby terminals are free. Files stay in the courthouse, pages must not be removed and photography of court documents is not allowed. Some sealed or confidential materials require a court order. The public record route does not give a requester unrestricted access to every item in a criminal file.

Use VSC-REC-002 for the criminal copy request

Select form VSC-REC-002 for criminal, civil, family and small-claims records. VSC-REC-001 is the separate juvenile, adoption and probate request form. State the case number, document names and whether copies must be certified. Copies of court files are provided in person or by mail, not electronically or by fax.

For criminal copies by mail, the court’s copy instructions give Hall of Justice, Attn: Records, P.O. Box 6489, Ventura, CA 93006. Include payment and a self-addressed envelope with enough postage. The same records page gives 800 South Victoria Avenue for written search requests, so use the address for the specific service you are requesting.

Budget for search, pages and certification

Copies cost $0.50 per page, meaning one side of a document. Certification adds $40 to the page charges for the requested criminal record; the special divorce-judgment price is unrelated to DUI copies. The records page lists a $15 search request for up to 15 names and says searches cannot be requested by telephone.

The copy instructions also discuss a research fee when locating requested documents takes more than ten minutes. Ask staff which charge applies and avoid assuming both always apply. For an unknown page total, the court allows a check payable to Superior Court with a not-to-exceed amount on the memo line; choose your limit and confirm that it covers certification and any research.

Allow for off-site retrieval and mailed-copy processing

Some older files are stored off-site. The case-inquiry instructions warn that retrieval may require at least two court days; mailed copy requests may take several weeks depending on size and scope. These are different stages, so two court days is not a promise of mailed delivery. Staff will notify you when the requested file or copies are ready.

If a deadline matters, give the records staff the case number and ask about actual availability before visiting. After receipt, check the defendant, count, disposition date and certification. Report a missing page or mismatch to Records with the request reference and the exact document description.

Use DMV for driving-history questions and corrections

California DMV’s own-driver-record service costs $2 online or $5 by mail. The online record is for viewing and printing; print before closing the payment confirmation or another purchase may be needed. For a certified mailed copy, use form INF 1125. DMV lists DUI convictions on a noncommercial public driving record for ten years; that reporting period does not establish when a court file disappears.

For an incorrect driving entry, DMV identifies form DL 207 and supporting court or law-enforcement documentation as correction routes. Keep the court order that shows the accurate outcome. Ventura’s District Attorney case-information page asks for a name and birth date for its own inquiries, but that does not change the court website’s ban on online birth-date searches.
